In Krillion the first answer that comes to mind is usually the one that scores worst. These hints help you get past it fast. They work on today's dive, the archive and Unlimited alike.
The five-step method
- Name the obvious answer in your head, then drop it. If it came to you in a second, it came to most players too. That is Plankton territory (10 points).
- Drop the second answer too. The "clever" pick that feels obscure is often what the game calls Too Clever, worth 15 points.
- Change the axis. Instead of "the most famous one", think of a sub-group: a region, an era, a specialist field, a hobby, a children's book, a menu, a map.
- Go specific but real. Deep answers are usually genuine things with a narrow audience, not made-up or misspelled names. The game builds answer sets from dictionaries, encyclopedias and similar reference sources.
- Type it with a few seconds to spare. A safe Schooler (30) beats running out the clock with nothing. You only need one valid answer per round.
Hint patterns by prompt type

| Places | Capitals and tourist icons | Small countries, islands, rivers, mountain ranges, historic regions |
| People | Household names | Supporting players, earlier eras, other countries, behind-the-scenes roles |
| Words | Everyday words | Technical terms, loanwords, older or regional words |

Things that cost you points
- Autocorrect surprises. Many answers have aliases, and a guess one or two letters off an alias can match a different answer than you meant. Spell carefully. See how autocorrect works.
- Chasing the 100 every round. The One in a Krillion answer is picked partly for being satisfying to find, not only for rarity. A steady run of Rares and Deep Cuts adds up: see the score calculator.
- Missing answers. If a valid answer isn't accepted, the official FAQ says the set may simply have missed it.
